Glass railings can be used both indoors and outdoors to prevent accidents and injuries. They represent a significant financial investment, so you will want to care for them and keep them in good condition. Glass railings are easy to maintain if you know how to do the job right. Using the wrong products or the wrong techniques can cause damage. Here are some important things you should know.

HOW TO CLEAN AND PROTECT YOUR GLASS RAILINGS

Begin by hosing off outdoor railings or wiping indoor glass railings with water to get rid of any loose dirt, dust, and other debris. Once you have done that, you will be able to see any areas with stuck-on grime that will require more attention.

Fill a bucket with a mixture of water, dish soap, and a little lemon juice. The acid in lemon juice can help remove stains. Don’t use a regular glass cleaner because it can damage tempered glass.

Don’t scrub stains from glass railings with a material that can cause scratches or leave lint behind. Newspaper is an excellent choice to remove caked-on debris without scratching or depositing lint.

Some people recommend using a razor blade to remove tough, stuck-on debris from glass. While that can work, it has to be done very carefully. If you use too much pressure, you can scratch the glass, which can detract from its appearance. If you decide to use a razor blade, make sure it’s clean. Any debris that is stuck to the blade can damage the glass. Whenever possible, avoid using a razor blade altogether and instead use a newspaper or a sponge.

Once you have cleaned the glass, rinse it off. That will get rid of any debris that you loosened and help you make sure that you didn’t miss any spots. When you’re confident that the glass railings are clean, wipe them with a microfiber cloth or squeegee to remove most of the water. Then let the railings air dry completely. That should leave you with a streak-free shine.
